This module introduces a sequence of reflective, multimodal assignments designed to help learners examine their identities within evolving digital and AI-mediated information environments. Beginning with an introductory digital storytelling activity and culminating in a final reflective video, the module supports a progression from initial self-awareness to deeper metacognitive reflection on how learners create, share, and make meaning.
These two assignments serve as bookends for the Digital Storytelling course. They provide a structured opportunity for learners to first identify with the metaliteracy roles and then evaluate their development as self-directed learners through the lens of the metaliteracy characteristics. Together, they create a clear arc from identity formation to reflective self-assessment.
An applied writing activity, developed as part of this toolkit, introduces learners to working with AI while reflecting on their roles as metaliterate learners. Positioned between these assignments, it provides an opportunity for learners to engage directly with AI as part of their writing process while developing awareness of how their thinking, decision-making, and sense of authorship are shaped through this interaction.
Grounded in Metaliteracy Goal 1, the module emphasizes reflection on strengths, experiences, and areas for growth. Learners consider how their perspectives shape engagement with information, how they contribute to dynamic environments, and how they adapt their practices in response to new tools and technologies, including AI. While not dependent on AI, the assignments are well suited for AI-enhanced contexts, prompting reflection on how digital and generative tools influence creativity, decision-making, and authorship.
Although developed within a digital storytelling context, these assignments are adaptable across disciplines and educational settings, supporting reflective and metacognitive learning in a wide range of courses.
